Manchester United will make an attempt to sign Aston Villa captain Ron Vlaar in January in attempt to solve their defensive problems, according to the Daily
The 29-year-old was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in the summer, but a move did not materialise as manager Louis van Gaal eventually decided against strengthening the centre of his defence. Van Gaal is known to be a massive admirer of Vlaar, having worked with him while in charge of the Dutch national team for two years.
So far this season, Man Utd have suffered numerous injuries and suspensions to defensive players. They take on Crystal Palace on Saturday with Marcos Rojo out having dislocated his shoulder, and Chris Smalling also unavailable after being sent off in Sunday’s Manchester derby defeat.
That is added to by an injury list which includes Jonathan Evans and Phil Jones, meaning van Gaal could be forced to go with youngsters Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair against the Eagles.
Vlaar will be out of contract at the end of the season, although Villa are desperately trying to tie him down to a new deal. The West Midlands club value their skipper at £12m, but he could be available for less in January should his future still be undecided.
