Ayoze Perez, known as the ‘machine to make goals’ back with former club Tenerife, has been backed by Newcastle team mate Mehdi Abeid to become a star scorer for the club, according to the Daily
Perez scored a sublime flick to get Newcastle on their way to a fifth straight win and bag his third goal in as many games against West Brom at the weekend.
The striker had to bide his time for a start since his £1.6m move but has firmly grasped the opportunity – making a big impression on Tyneside and the Premier League.
The 21-year-old is already being viewed as one of the bargains of the season and will surely be regarded as this if he sustains this glut of goal scoring form.
The diminutive figure of Perez is deceiving of his skill and he was watched by clubs such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Everton, Arsenal, Schalke, Borussia Dortmund and Porto before making his move to the North East – Porto were regarded as Newcastle’s biggest challengers for his signature.
Newcastle had been watching the player for over a year and this was thought to be the decisive factor in sealing his move from Tenerife to England.
And following his star role in the club’s revival from their abysmal start this season, midfielder Abeid is predicting big things for the Spaniard.
He said: “He scored a fantastic goal. He will score a lot more for us, he is helping us a lot.
“We know he can do big things for us. Perez could be a big player for us. He is very technical, a very good player. We can see in training he has some great skills and he showed it against West Bromwich.”
Newcastle fans sang Perez’s name to the tune of their famous Andy Cole chant at the weekend and the player is grateful for the support.
He said after the game: “I listened to the song and my team mates explained the significance.
“It’s the same song they sung about Andy Cole. It was very important for me. It’s very nice.
“It’s not often you score a goal like that.”
