Roberto Martinez wary of workload on Everton youngster Barkley

While Everton boss Roberto Martinez has insisted that Ross Barkley is ready to handle any pressure he is still wary of any extra work load brought on by England duty, the Daily Star is reporting.

Barkley was one of the country’s brightest stars last season as he rose to prominence with some outstanding performances for Everton.

However the youngster missed the first ten games of his clubs season after picking up a knee injury during preseason.

The 20-year-old has picked up where he left off and earned himself a recall to the England set-up with many touting him a future key man for his country.

Martinez is the first to agree that Barkley could be set for big things but is still keen to manage the youngster through his progression.

He is in constant contact with England manager Roy Hodgson and is making sure his preparation is right for the European qualifier against Slovenia on Saturday – but is confident that he will be handled in the right way.

He said: “We’ve got a very good relationship with Roy – I’ve spoken with him and tried to pass on as much information as I could about the players.

“We’re all very clear that Ross and John Stones need handling very specifically.

“As a youngster you need to be very much aware of the amount of football you are playing.

“A young player will never feel tired or tell you that they’re tired but sometimes there are certain situations when you can get overloaded quite easily.

“I think Ross showed last season for Everton that the bigger the game the bigger the performance.

“He has shown that he’s ready to take responsibility and that he’s someone who doesn’t see the emotion that surrounds the game, all he sees is that he’s someone who wants to enjoy his football.”
