Roma line up move for Liverpool’s Johnson

Roma are growing increasingly confident that they can seal a move for Liverpool right-back Glen Johnson on a free transfer in January, the Daily Mail has reported.

The England international is yet to agree on a new contract with the Reds, with his current deal set to expire at the end of this season. Negotiations between Liverpool and Johnson’s representatives are still ongoing, but the club is unwilling to raise his salary, as he already earns in the region of £120,000 per week.

The Serie A side, however, would be willing to pay the wages on a Bosman transfer and they believe that Johnson’s versatility could be a useful addition to the side that currently sits second in the table behind Juventus. The 30-year-old has experience of playing at left-back as well as the right of midfield.

Johnson joined Liverpool from Portsmouth in the summer of 2009 and has been a regular in the starting XI throughout his time with the club, making 180 appearances in all competitions and scoring eight goals. Should he join Roma, he was join former England teammate Ashley Cole in the Italian capital.
