Southampton and Manchester City, the two nearest challengers to Premier League leaders Chelsea, clash in an intriguing encounter at the St. Mary’s Stadium.
After eight wins out of nine, the Saints’ performance in their last game at Aston Villa was strangely subdued as they struggled to penetrate – and indeed stretch – an organised backline, particularly after falling behind to a first half mistake.
Graziano Pelle was a peripheral figure as Southampton toiled, but the superb Nathaniel Clyne eventually got their equaliser. Even so, manager Ronald Koeman will be expecting higher energy levels, along with more pace and incision in their attacking play.
The visitors will be boosted by two comeback victories in the last week. Going behind early on to Swansea City was a real test of their character, but they managed to come through for a crucial win which prevented them from falling further behind Chelsea.
Tuesday was the Sergio Aguero show, as the Argentine hit an amazing hat-trick to spare City’s blushes against the 10 men of Bayern Munich, and give them a fighting chance of making it through to the knockout stages of the Champions League. They will be hoping that win can lead them into an extended run of improved fortunes.
The home side are hoping that Steven Davis can return after missing the game at Villa, but have no new injury problems.
Fernandinho and Yaya Toure can play for City after missing the Champions League game due to suspension, but Edin Dzeko, Aleksander Kolarov and David Silva are still out.
