Sunderland manager Gus Poyet is weighing up replacing the out-of-form Vito Mannone

According to the Sunderland Echo, Sunderland manager Gus Poyet is considering replacing error-prone Vito Mannone ahead of tonight’s clash against Crystal Palace.

“The decision is a matter of whether you give another opportunity or if that was enough. Do you feel he’s all right to play or do you think it’s better not to for the team? Sometimes it’s the most difficult part for the players to accept. Do you want to change it, or back him up? Everything depends on how he performs, and what’s going round in his head,” said Poyet.

Italian goalkeeper Vito Mannone has made costly errors leading to goals in his last two games, and Poyet did previous hint that Costel Pantilimon could come in and replace him if he couldn’t eradicate the mistakes from his game.

Their clash against an out-of-form Crystal Palace side is highly important as the Black Cats are sitting in a precarious position in the Premier League. They cannot afford any more costly individual errors.

“If you play Costel, I didn’t back (Mannone) up. These are opinions you’re going to have all the time. The decision is mine, which is what I like. Vito’s been training all right, we’ve watched the clips with him. That’s normal every week.”
