Chelsea can extend their lead at the top of the Premier League to nine points if they can triumph away to Sunderland, who were the last team to beat them in the Premier League back in April.
With the exception of the now infamous 8-0 thrashing at Southampton in October, Sunderland have been tough to beat during this campaign, and they would have come away the happier following the draw with struggling Leicester City last time out.
Despite that, they are still struggling to score goals with any degree of regularity, and as a result are not winning enough games to push themselves towards the top half of the Premier League, but Gustavo Poyet will be hoping to pull off another shock victory over his former club.
There has been plenty more evidence on display as to Chelsea’s superiority over the rest of the Premier League in recent days, with the victory over West Bromwich Albion secured with minimal fuss before Schalke 04 were hammered on their own ground as the Blues ensured progress to the last 16 of the Champions League.
With every passing game, Jose Mourinho’s team seem to look even more unstoppable, and the stuttering form of those below them is only giving them extra encouragement. That said, they must stay level-headed as an unexpected loss could be just around the corner.
Patrick van Aanholt is still out for Sunderland and so will not be given the chance to prove something against the West London club. Emanuele Giaccherini and Billy Jones are both highly doubtful.
The leaders are aided by a lack of injury concerns with Loic Remy now fully fit, meaning that youngster Nathan Ake is the only absentee.
