After a failed pursuit over the summer Bayern Munich’s Xheridan Shaqiri has revealed that he did in fact want to join Liverpool, the Daily
Shaqiri impressed in Brazil this summer during the World Cup and did enough for Brendan Rodgers to try and lure the Swiss star to Anfield.
Talks took place between the officials of both clubs and it was thought that the winger was extremely close to penning a long term contract as part of the £15m switch.
But the German champions had a change of heart and decided to block any potential deal and scupper Liverpool’s attempts to sign him.
The 23-year-old has now revealed that he was ready for the move as he wanted to start afresh amid a lack of first team football.
He said: “It was known that I wanted to do something in the summer. After the World Cup I felt that it would be better for me to try something new.
“Then FC Bayern decided that I should stay. In that case, you cannot do much as a player. But I feel very good at Munich, too.”
Although he is contracted until the end of next season it is thought Shaqiri will hold talks with bosses come the New Year as he seeks to clarify his future at the club.
He has made just eight appearances in the league this season – and only one of these was a starting place.
