Arsenal are set to return to their pursuit of Sporting Lisbon defensive midfielder William Carvalho when the transfer window opens on Thursday and will make a £20m offer, according to the Daily
The North London club has held an interest in Carvalho for several months and negotiations over a possible move began in October, but those talks broke down after Sporting put a price of £30m on his head.
But since then, they have been eliminated from the Champions League, while Arsenal have made it through to the knockout stages. As a result, the Portuguese side could be willing to cash in on their biggest asset in January and accept an offer well below their original asking price.
Carvalho played in two of Portugal’s three matches at the World Cup and is one of the most highly-rated midfielders in Europe, though he can also play in central defence. Arsenal have long been looking for a quality player to sit in front of the back four and have examined a number of potential targets, but it now seems Carvalho could be their man.
The 22-year-old joined Sporting in 2011, but it is only in the past year that he has become a first-team regular, impressing in his 54 appearances, in which he has scored four goals.
