Arsenal face the prospect of being without Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain after the midfielder suffered a groin injury in the weekend Premier League win over Newcastle, ESPN
Oxlade-Chamberlain was said to have been suffering from discomfort in the area prior to the match but played regardless, with the Gunners already carrying a number of injuries to midfielders. Mikel Arteta, Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey all missed the game against the Magpies.
Manager Arsene Wenger confirmed he intended to substitute Oxlade-Chamberlain but before he could do so, the England international exacerbated the problem. “I wanted to take him off and then he takes the ball and crosses the whole pitch and cannot run anymore,” Wenger lamented.
Wenger added that given both Arsenal’s current injury situation and Oxlade-Chamberlain’s talent, losing the ex-Southampton starlet would be a hammer blow to his side. “We cannot afford to lose him at the moment,” he confirmed. “He’s got a pain in his groin. I took him to Galatasaray [last Tuesday] and maybe two games was a lot for him.”
The win over Newcastle leaves Arsenal in sixth place, two points short of West Ham, who, in fourth, occupy the last Champions League place. Arsenal are also two points ahead of neighbours Tottenham Hotspur.
