Chelsea attempted to trump Manchester United’s mooted interest in Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale, Football
Reports in Spain claim the Blues bid €130m for the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder in an effort to gazump their Premier League rivals. It’s suggested that Madrid could be forced into selling Bale should the two interested parties get into a bidding war, but club President Florentino Perez has said Bale will never be sold.
Chelsea’s offer was said to have been made last week and, should the transfer happen, Madrid would turn to Belgium international Eden Hazard as a replacement. Hazard has been a regular in the Chelsea team that has climbed to the top of the Premier League table, making 27 appearances and scoring 10 goals for Jose Mourinho’s side.
Bale is said to have a release clause of €1bn in his Madrid contract, having moved to the Spanish capital from Tottenham in the summer of 2013. He has this season played 23 times under Carlo Ancelotti, scoring 11 goals, as Madrid ended 2014 in first place in La Liga.
