Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini believes the team will improve as the season goes on and the Gunners’ injured players return to action, adding that he felt they deserved to beat Liverpool in their last Premier League outing, the
Flamini played as Arsene Wenger’s side drew 2-2 with the Reds on Sunday, Martin Skrtel scoring a late equaliser after Mathieu Debuchy and Olivier Giroud cancelled out Philippe Coutinho’s opening goal. The result leaves Arsenal in sixth place, four points behind West Ham, who hold the final Champions League qualification spot, and five points ahead of Liverpool, who are 10th.
“I believe we are better at digging in than we were,” said Flamini. “If you remember the last score here, it was 4-0 at half-time and 5-1 at the end. Of course we have improved.
“From the first to the last minute, it is high intensity with a lot of duels,” the Frenchman continued. “You have to give everything and you have to play with your heart to win these kind of games. The team played well.
“It is never easy to go to Anfield and play tiki-taka, so you have to win the challenges and I think we did it. We were a bit unlucky. There was a possibility to win the game but sometimes you have to accept it. Frustration is the word because I think we deserved to win.”
Arsenal went to Anfield with a number of injuries, particularly in midfield, and Flamini insists that when Wenger has every player available, matters will only get better.
“It would be crazy to think we won’t improve because we lost so many key players and having them back is very important for the team,” the ex-Milan man said. “We definitely need them because in the championship and the last stages of the Champions League, you cannot do it with 11 players. You need 25 so it is important for us to have them back.
“The season is going to be long. We are only arriving at Christmas now. I am very confident in the team and very confident in the quality we have because we have a few top players.”
