Steven Gerrard was unable to launch a comeback for Liverpool, as the Reds were eliminated from the Champions League at the group stages after a disappointing draw against Basel at Anfield, reports BBC
Basel took a deserved lead inside of half an hour through Fabien Frei. The talented midfielder rifled a low effort that flew past the motionless Simon Mignolet in goal, round of a slick move by the Swiss champions.
Liverpool had no answer to their patented counter-attack style, with Basel continuing to carve open the Merseyside club at will. It was poor finishing and decision-making in the final third that kept the Champions League tie alive throughout.
In the second-half, things went from bad to worse. Substitute Lazar Markovic was harshly sent off for violent conduct which made Liverpool’s job even more difficult.
But they had a lifeline late on. Captain Steven Gerrard scored a beautifully-taken free-kick in the last few minutes of the game to threaten an incredible European comeback, but Basel held firm after some late scares.
The results sees Liverpool now moved into the Europa League, while Basel are into the last-16 of the Champions League.
