Liverpool boosted in race to sign Martinez

Liverpool have been handed a boost in their pursuit of FC Porto striker Jackson Martinez after another of his suitors, Milan, pulled out of the race to sign the 28-year-old, according to Talksport.

Since joining in 2012, Martinez has an impressive scoring record for the Portuguese club, who he helped to win the league title with an unbeaten record in 2012-13. He has netted 74 times in 109 appearances in all competitions, with 14 of them coming in 18 outings this season.

He has been the subject of interest from of Europe’s biggest clubs in the past year and-a-half, with Chelsea initially leading the interest from the Premier League. However, the Blues long ago decided to pursue other targets, allowing the likes of Arsenal and especially Liverpool to enter the chase for the Colombian.

And the Reds have been given increased hope by the news that Milan will not be signing Martinez after being priced out of a deal; a fact confirmed by the player’s agent, who said: “I think it’s very difficult [for AC Milan]. Porto want the release clause to be paid (£28m) and they don’t intend to budge. I can confirm that Liverpool want the player.”
