Man Utd to battle Chelsea for Seamus Coleman in January

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is preparing a January showdown with Chelsea to sign Everton right back Seamus Coleman, the Daily Star is reporting.

The United manager has identified Coleman as the perfect addition to the right hand side of either of his two favoured formations and will go head to head with Mourinho to secure his signature.

Reports had claimed that United wanted the Irishman back in the summer when they tried to lure Everton into a swap deal with their former star Marouane Fellani but it was a non-starter.

While Chelsea are keen on the £25m rated right back Mourinho has options at full back in Branislav Ivanovic and Cesar Azpilicueta.

United on the other hand are short of quality in that position – currently playing Antonio Valencia there with Rafael struggling with injury, constantly in and out of the squad.

The Goodison Park side are said to be interested United youngster Adnan Januzaj – having had such success with young Barcelona winger Gerard Deulofeu last season – and he could be used as bait in any potential deal for Coleman.

Coleman has quickly developed in to one of the league’s best full backs having cost Everton just £60,000.
