Manchester United will be unable to call upon record signing Angel Di Maria for Sunday’s encounter with bitter rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford, Sky
The winger has missed the club’s last two games against Stoke City and Southampton after picking up a hamstring injury in the first half of the 3-0 home win over Hull City on November 29. He had previously played in every Premier League match following his arrival, making a strong impact by scoring three goals and claiming six assists in 11 outings.
Missing out along with the Argentine is defender Chris Smalling, who is expected to miss two weeks after being forced off during the 2-1 win at the St. Mary’s Stadium on Monday. But despite these setbacks, manager Louis van Gaal is optimistic that his injury problems are finally beginning to relent.
“We have only four players injured so that is better than ever,’ said the Dutchman. ‘Only (Luke) Shaw, (Chris) Smalling, Di Maria and (Daley) Blind (are out). As I have said already last week, the light at the end of the tunnel is in sight and I believe that by the end of December maybe we shall only have three or four injuries.’
