Manchester United midfielder Angel Di Maria has been named Argentina’s best foreign-based player of 2014, ESPN
Di Maria beat off competition from the likes of forward trio Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez, of Barcelona, Manchester City and Juventus respectively, to land the prize after helping Real Madrid to victory in the Champions League at the end of last season.
The 26-year-old also won the Copa del Rey and European Super Cup before he left the Santiago Bernabeu for Old Trafford, making a £60m move to Old Trafford after the World Cup. Di Maria was part of the Argentina squad that finished as runners-up to Germany, although he missed the final through injury.
Messi has been the perennial winner of the award, having claimed it every year since 2006, but was beaten by Di Maria, while the goals of Aguero and Tevez, which helped their respective teams win their respective leagues, were also considered secondary to Di Maria’s achievements.
Di Maria has made 11 appearances for United, scoring three goals, and last season featured 50 times for club and country, finding the net on nine occasions.
