Newcastle 0-1 Sunderland: Johnson strikes late to sink the Magpies in tempestuous Tyne-Wear derby

Sunderland winger Adam Johnson struck late in the second-half, as the Black Cats once again saw past fierce rivals Newcastle at St. James Park, reports BBC Sport.

It was a game of typically strong tackles, moments of passion, plenty of chances, but wastefulness being the most common occurrence in the 90 minutes. Sunderland’s Connor Wickham and Jordi Gomez missed gilt-edged chances either side of the break that should have put the visitors ahead much earlier. Steven Fletcher hit the crossbar in the first-half too.

Newcastle had opportunities, however, with Ayoze Perez looking the most likely to hit the back of the net, but the young Spanish striker was surprisingly off cue on a number of occasions, and such misses came back to haunt the Magpies late on.

A breakaway from Sunderland in the dying minutes of the game saw Adam Johnson volley home from inside the area to earn a joyous Gus Poyet all three points.
