Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is relaxed and confident that Raheem Sterling will remain at the club and become their new talisman, according to the Telegraph.
Munich are said to be preparing a summer move for the England youngster after contract talks continued to stall – Sterling and his representatives are unhappy with Liverpool’s offer of a new £70,000 a week contract to replace his current £30,000 a week deal, which has two and a half year left to run.
There are growing fears that with Liverpool’s current slump and their failure to claim the Premier League title last season the player could follow Luis Suarez out of the club to pursue his own ambitions of success.
However after a blistering start to the season following an impressive World Cup, Sterling has endured a tough few months as his performances fail to hit the highs now expected of him.
He came in for criticism at the weekend after missing a succession of golden opportunities during the club’s 3-0 defeat at Manchester United, with former United and Everton defender Phil Neville urging the youngster to focus on his contract while he focuses on players – amid claims speculation is getting in his head.
But Rodgers is not unduly worried by the current predicament, insisting Sterling will in fact be the heart of a Liverpool revival.
He said: “I think he has been absolutely outstanding. The kid played in a front role for me at Manchester United, as a striker moving across the line. OK, he might not have been able to get a goal at the weekend, but I thought he was absolutely outstanding.
“He has been a real catalyst for us in terms of our attacking threat and I don’t think there’s any way there’s anything affecting him. He is the type of boy who leaves his representatives to work with the club in order to hopefully organise the deal. He has no real influence in that.
“I’ll never be surprised teams are linked with Raheem because he’s such a big talent and he’s just turned 20 years of age. He’s a wonderful young player and a very mature young man. I’m quite relaxed about it.”
