Southampton are closing to securing a deal to sign Werder Bremen winger Eljero Elia for £4m when the transfer window opens in January, according to the Daily
The 27-year-old has previously been linked with Merseyside duo Liverpool and Everton, but now looks set to move to the South coast and join compatriot Ronald Koeman, who is looking to add strength in depth to his squad as well as pace, with resources currently stretched.
Elia has been at Werder Bremen since 2012 and has scored five goals in 68 appearances. He began his career in the Netherlands with ADO Den Haag and FC Twente, and has also gone on to represent Hamburg and Italian giants Juventus. He struggled in Italy, however, making only five appearances after joining for £7m.
In his international career, he has often acted as understudy to Arjen Robben, although he is naturally a left-sided player. Elia has 28 caps for his country, and featured most notably in the 2010 World Cup, in which he regularly came on as a substitute, including in the final against Spain.
