Wojciech Szczesny has said Arsenal are still in the race to land the Premier League title this season and wants to see the team keep the pressure on the top two, Manchester City and Chelsea, the
Szczesny revealed that the Gunners’ aim for the Christmas and New Year period was to claim nine points out of a possible nine and with wins over Queens Park Rangers and West Ham, they are on course to meet that goal. Southampton – a place higher in the table than fifth-placed Arsenal and level on points with Arsene Wenger’s team – are the opposition on New Year’s Day.
“When you start the season you always want to win the championship,” Szczesny said. “That is the only thought in our heads. But with the position that we’ re in, we have to look at short-term goals.
“We said before the run of Christmas games we wanted nine points,” he continued. “We have six so far, so we go to Southampton with confidence to get three points. They won’t be short of confidence either after a good result against Chelsea.
“Of course we want to catch up on Chelsea and Manchester City. But for now we have to climb up the table and see if we can put pressure on them.”
Arsenal are currently 10 points adrift of second-place City and 13 behind leaders Chelsea, with a visit to the Etihad Stadium to come in the middle of January and a home game against Jose Mourinho’s Blues in April.
