Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has insisted that his side will start to improve their goals tally if they continue with their current style of football, Sky
The West Midlands club have scored the fewest goals of any team in the Premier League this season, finding the net only 11 times in 18 matches going into Sunday’s home encounter with Sunderland. Despite that, they lie five points clear of the bottom three in 13th place.
Striker Christian Benteke has showed signs that he is returning to his best form, but due to an injury which kept him out until November, he has only two goals this season, although that is just one behind the club’s joint top scorers Gabriel Agbonlahor and Andreas Weimann.
Lambert has recently changed the team’s playing style, opting for a more possession-based game, and the Scot is confident that they can reap the rewards of that switch and begin to fire in front of goal. “If we keep doing what we are doing and take the chances then we will win more games than not,” he said.
“There will be so many twists and turns throughout the season, but if we keep doing what we’ve been doing we will be fine. There are good players like Joe Cole still to come back and if we get everybody fit then we will certainly, the way we are playing, be a match for teams.
“It’s not for the lack of trying. We play football the right way and I cannot ask for any more, other than the score. We look comfortable, our movement is good and I was pleased with all of that.’
