Toure rejects talk of Liverpool sacking Rodgers

Liverpool defender Kolo Toure has rubbished suggestions manager Brendan Rodgers is under the threat of the sack following the defeat to Manchester United, ESPN has reported.

The Reds are 10th in the table after the 3-0 loss at Old Trafford, having won by the same score line on their previous visit to the ground and finished second in the Premier League table last season. Goals from Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Robin van Persie condemned Liverpool to a seventh defeat of the season and extended the gap between Rodgers’ team and United to 10 points.

Toure, who entered the match as a first-half substitute for the injured Glen Johnson, said speculation over Rodgers’ position was nonsensical. “It’s crazy to even talk about his future,” Toure insisted. “He’s a great manager and we all know that. Just look at how fantastically he did last season. This season has been tougher for him. But a lot of new players came in and things change. Time is needed for everyone to gel.”

The former Arsenal and Manchester City title winner added that there’s no doubt about the players’ backing for the boss. “We’re all behind him and we’re all trying to make things better. In the Premier League things can turn very quickly,” Toure stressed. “I believe in this manager and I believe in this group of players. I know we will improve during the second half of the season. We are missing some players who will be back soon.”
