Arsenal agree Paulista deal as Campbell moves the other way on loan

Arsenal have agreed a deal in principle to sign Villarreal defender Gabriel Paulista, with striker Joel Campbell set to move the other way on loan until the end of the season, BBC Sport has reported.

The Spanish club say that the transfer is all but concluded, although Arsenal will have to gain a work permit in order to sign the Brazilian, who is yet to win a senior international cap for his country. The value of the Gunners’ offer has not been disclosed, but Villarreal were believed to be looking for a fee in the region of £15m.

Paulista moved to Villarreal upon their promotion back to La Liga in the summer of 2013, and has gone on to play a key role in helping the club re-establish itself in the Spanish top-flight. In that year and-a-half, he has made 50 appearances in all competitions.

Since joining from Deportivo Saprissa in 2011, Campbell has spent most of his Arsenal career out on loan, but impressive performances for Olympiakos and at the World Cup with Costa Rica saw him given sporadic first-team outings this term, during which he has failed to score in 10 matches.
