Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger revealed he missed out on signing a 17-year-old Angel Di Maria due to work permit issues, reports BBC
Manchester United signed the Argentine international last summer for £60M from Real Madrid, but Arsenal could have had Di Maria back when he was still playing in Portugal, according to their manager. Wenger was critical of the work permit regulations that cause him to miss out on Di Maria, and with the winger having now become a world-class player elsewhere.
We wanted him to come here. We had identified Di Maria when he was 17 in an international competition. But he went to Portugal, and from Portugal he went to Spain. Why? Because he could not get a work permit for England, so that meant you could only get him to England once he was worth a huge amount of money,” said Wenger.
