The 24-year-old began his career at Gremio, during which time he was the subject of bids from Chelsea and Premier League rivals Manchester United, but he instead joined Shakhtar for £6m in January 2010. He has since gone on to score 35 goals in 186 appearances and help the club to 11 trophies including five consecutive Ukrainian titles.
He formed a strong playing relationship with current Chelsea player Willian at the Donbass Arena, and is now understood to be keen on a move to England, although Shakhtar are a notoriously tough club to negotiate with.
The Blues are also looking to sign Fiorentina star Juan Cuadrado, having tabled a bid of £20.6m. The Colombian has a release clause of £26.8m, but discussions are continuing between the club and the player’s agent. These transfer bids come as Chelsea prepare for the expected departures of Mohamed Salah and Andre Schurrle.
