Chelsea make contact with Messi’s representatives

Chelsea have made contact with Barcelona star Lionel Messi’s father and his other representatives as speculation over a possible summer move grows, according to the Independent.

Messi has spent his entire senior career in Catalonia, becoming the club’s all-time record goalscorer, winning a hoard of major trophies and breaking numerous other records, but he was surprisingly left out of the starting XI for Sunday’s 1-0 loss to Real Sociedad in La Liga, fuelling talk of a rift with Head Coach Luis Enrique.

The 27-year-old added to that by following a number of Chelsea players on Instagram on Tuesday evening, while Blues owner Roman Abramovich would be willing to meet his buyout clause of €250m, although Barcelona insist that Messi is not for sale at any price.

This reported contact comes despite Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho’s claim on Boxing Day that a deal for Messi was ‘impossible’ due to Financial Fair Play rules. He said: “Because at this moment there is financial fair play and with the financial fair play we have to follow certain rules, certain numbers and we obviously have no conditions to buy, as you say a ‘super amazing player’ paid with ‘super amazing numbers’ that Chelsea at this moment we cannot do.”
