Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho says not signing Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard was one of his greatest regrets

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho admits his failure to sign Steven Gerrard from Liverpool was one of his biggest regrets, reports BBC Sport.

“We did everything to try (to sign him) and it was almost there. His people were open to him joining a top side like Chelsea. But to me personally he never said he would come. Never,” said the Blues boss.

Gerrard looked set to sign for the Blues back in 2005, but had a change in mind and signed a new deal with Liverpool. He will end his association with the Merseyside club in the summer, with the veteran midfielder joining MLS side La Galaxy, and Mourinho revealed the plans he had for the England international a decade ago.

“I was dreaming of Claude Makelele, Gerrard and Frank Lampard in midfield. We were playing in a proper triangle without a number 10 and playing Makelele in front of the defenders. Me, (Chelsea owner)Mr Abramovich and (former Chelsea chief executive) Peter Kenyon dreamed of that,” he added.
