Toronto striker Jermain Defoe is undergoing a medical at Sunderland ahead of a proposed move to the Stadium of Light which would see Jozy Altidore go the other way, BBC
The 32-year-old has been training with former club Tottenham during the MLS close-season, and has recently attracted interest from a large number of Premier League clubs, with 10 reportedly in the race to sign him in January. He has managed 11 goals in 16 appearances for Toronto, who he joined in February 2013.
The deal could depend on Altidore’s move being ratified by the MLS, with the American set to leave Wearside after a disappointing 18-month stay which has seen him score just one Premier League goal – against Chelsea in December 2013. As a result, he has been a bit-part player this season, with Steven Fletcher and Connor Wickham often preferred by manager Gustavo Poyet.
