Everton manager Roberto Martinez has called on his players to relax and enjoy their football ahead of Tuesday evening’s FA Cup third round clash with West Ham United, the Liverpool
In recent weeks, the Toffees have endured their worst run of form since Martinez arrived at the club in the summer of 2013, losing all four of their Premier League matches over the festive period. That sequence has seen them slip to 13th in the table, some 15 points behind a place in the top four, which was their aim at the beginning of the season.
As a result, Martinez’s long-term has started to called into question, while some have accused the Spaniard of lacking a plan B. However, he attributes the run to a lack of confidence and claims the players are trying too hard.
“It is about trying to enjoy your football,” he said. ‘The players have been so responsible and so aware of the desire to do well in the league that we have been affected by moments when we have played well but dropped points.
“I feel that there are certain players who can’t enjoy themselves and that is a big footballing crime so we need to make sure that the competition places is there and they need to relax a bit more. There have been times when we have been cagey and not as fluent as we normally are and we need to get that back into our play.”
