Gerrard fitness concern for Liverpool

Liverpool are to monitor the fitness of departing captain Steven Gerrard as they sweat on his availability over the end of an incredibly busy January, ESPN is reporting.

Gerrard was withdrawn at half time during the 1-0 win over Sunderland last weekend and it is the same hamstring problem that is putting this month’s football in doubt.

Manager Brendan Rodgers described the substitution as a precaution but there has been no update on the player’s condition despite being assessed at the club’s training ground on Monday – but news on Gerrard is expected by the end of the week.

Liverpool travel to Aston Villa this weekend before hosting Chelsea in the first leg of their Capital One Cup semi final against Chelsea next Tuesday.

Bolton then visit Anfield for the FA Cup fourth round before the Reds visit Stamford Bridge for the second leg of their clash with Chelsea.

It could be a pivotal 11 days in Liverpool’s season as they bid to overcome a hugely disappointing league campaign with some form of silverware to end Gerrard’s Liverpool career with.

A rare one club player, the ex-England international has spent his entire youth and senior career at Anfield before I was announced in early January he would be leaving at the end of his current deal.
