Liverpool hope to lure James Milner with first team football

Liverpool are said to fancy their chances of signing Manchester City midfielder James Milner on a free in the summer, the Daily Star is reporting, with the hopes of more regular football central to any move.

Contract talks between City and their midfielder are stalling after the player wanted it made clear the amount of first team chances he would secure at the Etihad Stadium.

The England international has played a big part for his side this summer, but only down to several injuries to other key players in the side – he has in fact made 27 appearances this season and even played as an emergency striker for Manuel Pellegrini.

Pellegrini is said to be desperate to keep the utility man at the club but having been told that there will not be an improved offer on the table, Milner could leave for nothing in the summer.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is said to be a big admirer of the 29-year-old and has targeted revamping his midfield as a top priority over the course of this transfer window and the next.

In the wake of Steven Gerrard confirming he will leave the club at the end of the season Rodgers is searching for long term successors to his captain and has identified Milner as a top target – with the hopes of more regular football at the root of his planned proposal.
