Liverpool pushing for Real Madrid striker Benzema

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers wants to add a striker to his ranks in the January transfer window and Real Madrid Karim Benzema is his prime target, with a £38m transfer in the works, according to the Metro.

Benzema has been linked with a move to Anfield in the past but it was expected that any switch would only take place at the end of the season. But Daniel Sturridge’s long-term injury and the problems Rodgers has had replacing Luis Suarez, who joined Barcelona, mean Rodgers is keen to sign a prolific forward, having expressed an interest over the summer.

The France international in October signed a contract extension with Los Blancos and could have two more Premier League teams to choose from amid suggestions of interest from Arsenal and Manchester United.

Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert moved to Merseyside over the summer but have struggled to find the target on a regular basis, whereas Benzema has 14 goals in 29 appearances for Carlo Ancelotti’s side this season. He has however failed to score in his last six outings.
