Third meets fourth in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon as Southampton look to cement their grip on fourth place by ending Manchester United winning run at home.
Louis van Gaal will be pleased with his side’s recent record at Old Trafford, but the festive period will have him ruing missed opportunities, as Man Utd have forced to settle for a point in each of their last three away matches. Had they turned those draws into wins, the leading duo of Chelsea and Manchester City would have been very much in their sights.
But on the whole, performances are good, with Radamel Falcao beginning to find his feet and score some goals after a slow start to his loan spell from Monaco. Meanwhile, Angel Di Maria marked his return from injury with a goal at Yeovil Town in the FA Cup.
Southampton were frustrated to have been forced into a replay by Ipswich Town in that competition, but will have no reason to be upset with their recent league form, as they claimed an impressive 10 points from a possible 12 over Christmas and New Year.
The most important of those came last time out as they punished the mistakes of top four rivals Arsenal, and they have had a man in form in lively winger Sadio Mane. Sadly for the Saints, the Senegal international will not be available to continue his run of goalscoring.
A number of players are back for United, with Marouane Fellaini, Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo and Antonio Valencia all available, leaving Ashley Young as their only absentee.
Aside from Mane, the visitors are without Maya Yoshida due to international duty, but Jack Cork and Nathaniel Clyne have both recovered from injury.
