Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw has set his sights on an extended run in the starting XI after making his comeback at Stoke City on New Year’s Day, reports the club’s official
Signed for £27m from Southampton in the summer, the highly-rated England international has made nine appearances so far for United, although the start to his career at the club has occasionally been disrupted by injury.
He played an hour of the 1-1 draw at the Britannia Stadium, and during his prior absence Ashley Young was providing cover in the left wing-back position. Although Marcos Rojo is approaching full fitness, it now seems that a run in the side looks likely for Shaw, particularly after Young pulled a hamstring at Stoke.
And the 19-year-old is desperate to prove his worth to manager Louis van Gaal. He said: “I need game time now. I had [around] 60 minutes against Stoke and that was pre-planned. If I had been able to go on longer then I would have done, but I think the main thing for me now is to get a run of games together.
“It was a great feeling watching the team do well [in my absence]. We always want to win the games and now I am back fit I want to be a part of the winning run. There’s massive competition for me. I think it’s a big credit to Ashley Young. He has been superb, one of our best players for the last four or five matches.’
