Southampton’s newest arrival Eljero Elia scored twice, as Ronald Koeman’s side scored either side of half-time to earn all three points against managerless Newcastle, reports BBC
The Saints took the lead in the 14th minute through Elia, with the Dutch winger hitting a low effort after collecting a pass from midfielder James Ward-Prowse. Newcastle ‘keeper Tim Krul will have felt he should have saved Elia’s shot.
Newcastle fought back inside of half an hour from Yoan Gouffran. The Frenchman capitalised on a deflected clearance from Saints defender Florian Gardos to level the game for the Magpies.
But after the break, Southampton took the lead once more, and Elia got on the scoresheet again. This time, the debutant scored a defected effort that put the away side on course for all three points at St James’ Park.
