Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United have all missed out in their attempts to sign Juventus right-back Stephan Lichtsteiner after he signed a new deal with the Italian champions, reports the Daily
The Swiss international’s previous contract was due to end in the summer, meaning that he was able to sign a pre-contract agreement with another club and leave Juventus on a free transfer, but they have moved swiftly to convince Lichtsteiner to sign terms which would see him stay until 2017 and ensure he does not leave on a free transfer.
Man Utd had appeared the favourites to secure the 30-year-old’s signature had he left Turin, with manager Louis van Gaal looking to add more experience to his defence. Rival bosses Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho were also watching the situation closely, but they must now also pursue other targets.
Lichtsteiner has been at Juventus since July 2011 and has gone on to win three Serie A titles and the Italian Super Cup, scoring 11 goals in 134 appearances in all competitions.
