Saints re-target Porto defender Martins Indi

Southampton are set to return their sights to Dutch international defender Bruno Martins Indi having failed to land him during the summer, the Daily Mail has reported.

New boss Ronald Koeman looked to his countryman as he tried to bolster the Saints defensive options but the defender had already agreed terms with Portuguese side Porto.

Liverpool and Everton have also kept tabs on the Holland man, who is versatile enough to play at either full back of centre back, while Louis van Gaal was also interested in bringing him to Manchester United when he took over after the World Cup.

The 22-year-old cost Porto £6m from Feyenoord and while Koeman wants to lure the defender to St Mary’s, United remain a more likely destination after the player admitted he continues to think about working with his former national boss.

Fans may perhaps recognise Indi not for his football but mainly for a series of memes that came about as a consequence of several expressions made whilst on Holland duty at the World Cup.
