Schalke 04 general manager Horst Heldt has confirmed that the German club are close to completing a deal to sign Manchester City central defender Matija Nastasic, the Guardian
The Serbia international has fallen completely out of favour at the Etihad Stadium under Manuel Pellegrini, with his only appearance this season coming in the 3-0 Community Shield defeat to Arsenal back in August. Last term, he was only given 13 Premier League outings as City won the title for the second time in three years.
Roberto Mancini brought Nastasic to the club in the summer of 2012 and he initially established himself as a regular, but more recently he has found himself behind captain Vincent Kompany, Martin Demichelis and Eliaquim Mangala in Pellegrini’s thinking.
And Schalke, who are lying fifth in the Bundesliga, appear to have beaten off competition from a couple of Italian clubs to claim the 21-year-old, and Heldt is hopeful the deal – which will be a loan with an option to buy – can be done quickly.
He said: “We are negotiating back and forth, that’s how it goes. You get closer and closer and in this case we are no longer far apart from each other. I am optimistic that we will get this done in the coming days.”
