Tottenham eye swap deal for Everton’s McCarthy

Tottenham could offer Everton £20m plus two players for midfielder James McCarthy, who is also a target for Arsenal and Manchester United, according to Goal.com.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino is keen to add strength and quality to his midfield, and McCarthy has emerged as his main target in recent weeks after a pursuit of Southampton star Morgan Schneiderlin came to an end. And in order to move ahead of the competition, he is set to offer captain Younes Kaboul and long-serving winger Aaron Lennon as part of the deal.

Since taking charge in June, Pochettino has struggled to find a regular midfield combination, rotating the likes of Nabil Bentaleb, Paulinho, Ryan Mason, Etienne Capoue, Mousa Dembele and Benjamin Stambouli.

McCarthy joined Everton from Wigan Athletic in the summer of 2013, following manager Roberto Martinez after helping the Latics to a shock FA Cup success. He has since become a key figure in midfield, making 57 appearances in all competitions and scoring once. However, he has featured little in recent months due to injury.

The Irishman’s future has been the subject of additional doubt as Everton backtracked on a promise to hand him a new contract after his successful first season at Goodison Park.
