Tony Pulis, appointed to succeed Alan Irvine, hoped to make 23-year-old McManaman his first signing at the Hawthorns but has been rebuffed by the Championship club. Merseyside-born McManaman has this season scored five times in 22 appearances and has 17 goals in 108 games for the Latics.
Pulis is also said to be interested in signing Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher, who will be available on a free transfer at the end of the season, but reported interest in Elche striker Jonathas, who has netted eight times in La Liga so far, is understood to be wide of the mark.
West Brom are two points clear of the Premier League relegation zone prior to Monday evening’s game at Everton, who are a point better off than the Baggies. Pulis, formerly of Stoke City and Crystal Paladce, recorded a first league win at West Brom in the team’s last outing, a 1-0 win over struggling Hull City.
