Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren missed the decisive penalty as Besiktas won a penalty shootout, with the two sides having been level on aggregate in normal time and extra time, reports BBC
The game had few clear cut chances to talk about in the first 45 minutes, which was Liverpool’s game plan. The Reds didn’t need to win to go through to the next round of the Europa League, but they had to make sure they didn’t lose in 90 minutes.
Unfortunately for manager Brendan Rodgers, Liverpool conceded in the second-half through Tolgay Arslan, and couldn’t find a replay to swing the game in their favour.
Demba Ba hit the woodwork for the home side at the end of extra time, but his failure to put Besiktas through at the death mean the game eventually went to a shootout. Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren missed the last spot-kick to gift the win to Besiktas.
The result ends Liverpool’s European hopes, and caps a miserable time in both the Champions League and Europa League. The dropped into the latter following their group exit in the Champions League, but haven’t fared any better.
