With Jose Mourinho planning a summer move for Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane as part of drastic defensive changes, Gary Cahill’s Chelsea future has been cast into doubt according to the Daily Mail.
The 29-year-old has already made 33 appearances for the Blues this season but recently has spent time on the bench.
Mourinho has favoured young centre half Kurt Zouma and gave the youngster a huge vote of confidence in selecting him for the Capital One Cup semi-final second leg and huge Premier League clash against Manchester City – at the expense of Cahill.
The England international had formed a formidable partnership with veteran John Terry during the first half of the season but the Portuguese boss has been pleasantly surprised by the rapid growth of Zouma.
Terry is 34-years-old and the Blues boss knows he must soon consider replacing the club legend with Varane his preferred target – Mourinho attempted to bring the French defender to Stamford Bridge at the beginning of his second spell in charge, having overseen his development at Madrid.
Chelsea are also said to be watching highly regarded youngsters Aymeric Laporte and Jose Gimenez, both just 20 years old.
Mourinho wants to move Branislav Ivanovic into the heart of his defence and shift Cesar Azpilicueta to right back, both their natural positions, with those changes then allowing space for summer signing Filipe Luis to slot into his left back role.
