Chelsea scouts watch Icardi after player turns down Inter deal

Having turned down the latest contract offer from Inter Milan Chelsea have sent scouts to watch striker Mauro Icardi as they weigh up a move, the London Evening Standard is reporting.

Chelsea could be looking for a new striker in the summer with veteran Didier Drogba expected to take on more coaching responsibilities as his playing career draws to an end.

Icardi has been watched by Chelsea scouts for a number of games and representatives were there to watch him score a brace last weekend – taking his tally for the season to 13 goals from 22 league games.

And any clubs pursuing the Argentinian would have been handed a significant boost after the player failed to celebrate any of his goals as he expressed his growing frustrations with Inter over contract talks.

Icardi is fast growing into an impressive player but is still one of the lowest earners at the San Siro club – earning £11,000 a week.

The forward is looking for a significant pay rise to reflect his growing stature in the game and so far the Italians have only offered their man a pay increase to £28,000 a week, while the player is looking for around £43,000.

Inter are still reportedly confident they can come to an agreement over the player they signed for £9m from Sampdoria just two years ago.

However Chelsea will continue to watch the player with Jose Mourinho keen to keep three incredibly strong striking options in his squad.
