Demichelis close to new Man City contract

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has announced that central defender Martin Demichelis is likely to sign a new contract with the club in the coming weeks, ESPN has reported.

The veteran Argentine is out of contract at the end of the season and the club risk losing him on a free transfer. Manuel Pellegrini’s side are already short of centre-backs, with captain Vincent Kompany, Eliaquim Mangala and Dedryk Boyata the only other senior options available, with Matija Nastasic currently out on loan and expected to leave in the summer.

Demichelis joined Man City in August 2013 and has gone on to make 68 appearances, scoring three goals, helping the club win the Premier League last season as well as the Capital One Cup.

And Pellegrini is keen not to lose the experience that the 34-year-old brings. He said: “We will see, in the next days maybe he can renew his contract. I think Martin is a very important player for our squad, he is an experienced player, he is a leader of our group, he wants to stay, probably he will sign another contract.”

The Chilean was speaking in the press conference ahead of Saturday’s game against Newcastle United, where Jaunary signing Wilfried Bony is in line to make his debut. Pellegrini went on to hail the former Swansea City star as the ‘perfect’ player for Man City.
