Diarra’s West Ham move breaks down

West Ham have missed out on the free transfer signing of former Chelsea, Arsenal, Portsmouth and Real Madrid midfielder Lassana Diarra, ESPN has reported.

Diarra last played for Russian giants Spartak Moscow but left the club in August after a fall-out with manager Leonid Kuchuk. Diarra allegedly refused to train and left the Russian capital, and had been training with the Hammers with a view to signing for Sam Allardyce’s team.

Allardyce has however confirmed a problem with the paperwork has caused West Ham to cancel the transfer, despite having agreed terms with the 29-year-old. Allardyce said after the goalless draw with Southampton on Wednesday that the complication means the proposed transfer has proven to be a ‘waste of time.’

Diarra began his career at Le Havre, moving to Chelsea in 2005 after 29 games for the French club. He played 30 times for Chelsea and made little more than a dozen appearances for the Gunners, spent a season-and-a-half at Fratton Park and then switched to La Liga.

He played more than 100 times for Madrid and moved to Anzhi Makhachkala in 2012, and from there moved to Spartak, playing 17 times before exiting in 2014.
