Striker Edin Dzeko’s Manchester City future could be thrown into doubt as he is one of the main contenders to miss out on the club’s Champions League squad for the elimination stages, according to the Daily Star.
City need to submit their 21-man squad by midnight on Wednesday and are facing a dilemma of who to leave out.
Manager Manuel Pellegrini is sure to include new signing Wilfried Bony meaning an extra foreign star will have to be left out – as a result of their breach of Financial Fair Play rules last season.
Home grown players Joe Hart, Frank Lampard, James Milner, Gael Clichy and club trained Dedryck Boyata are certain to be included meaning as many as four foreign players are facing the chop.
Willy Caballero, Bacary Sagna, Stevan Jovetic and Dzeko are all being considered to miss out.
Many had anticipated Sagna as the main man to go but his star performance against Chelsea at the weekend has landed him in favour with Pellegrini despite his limited playing time this season.
Jovetic is similar to his strike partner Dzeko in the fact he has struggled for form and fitness this season, while the Chilean boss is also toying with the idea of leaving goalkeeping deputy Willy Caballero out and trusting third choice veteran Richard Wright.
However 28-year-old Dzeko looks the main candidate to miss out and would throw his Etihad future into serious doubt.
