Following his game changing performance on Monday Louis van Gaal has heaped praise on midfielder Marouane Fellaini declaring he is the club’s ace in the hole, Sky
United had started with Radamel Falcao up front alongside Wayne Rooney – starting further forward for the first time in a number of games – with the Belgian giant playing off the front two.
However another ineffectual display by the Colombian international saw him hauled off with Fellaini pushed into attack alongside skipper Rooney in reaction to Preston taking a shock lead.
Falcao had in fact failed to even attempt a shot on goal for the second game in a row.
The change worked with the 6ft 4in man terrorising the League One side’s centre backs and even netting a goal for himself as the Red Devils eventual won 3-1.
And following his star showing manager Van Gaal has been heaping praise on his midfielder, referring to him as his secret weapon as he once again helped to dig the club out of trouble.
He said: “I have used Fellaini a lot of times already – more than ever and he scores more than ever.
“He is a player that when we cannot beat the pressure with quality, we can always beat the pressure. That is a quality.
“Now I have played him for the first time in his (preferred) position but we have a lot of players who can play there.”
United eventually ran out winners thanks to goals from Ander Herrera, Fellaini and a late controversial penalty from Rooney.
