Gutierrez to make Newcastle return

Jonas Gutierrez is in the Newcastle squad to play Aston Villa, his first involvement in a Premier League fixture since recovering from testicular cancer, BBC Sport has confirmed.

Gutierrez is to start among the substitutes, manager John Carver has revealed, in what he described as a ‘huge lift for everybody.’ Gutierrez hasn’t played a Premier League game since April 2014, when he was on loan at Norwich City, and his last league run-out for the Magpies came in October 2013, when he was part of the team that beat Cardiff City.

The 31-year-old needed surgery to remove his left testicle, the operation carried out in his native Argentina, and chemotherapy treatment as well. He returned to training with Newcastle in November and in December, turned out for the club’s Under-21 side, playing 87 minutes against West Ham.

Gutierrez has also represented Velez Sarsfield and Spanish side Mallorca, joining Newcastle in 2008. He has gone on to make almost 200 appearances for the club, scoring 11 goals.
