Following months of contract talks Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has spoken of his growing confidence Raheem Sterling will sign a new deal, with an ‘incredible’ offer on the table, according to Sky
Despite the youngster’s current contract running until the year 2017 Liverpool have been keen to tie down the winger to an improved offer following his rapid rise at the club.
Sterling had an incredibly impressive year in 2014 and this has culminated in recent reports linking Real Madrid to a move for the 20-year-old.
The England international has been unhappy with offers from the club to date but Rodgers confirmed in his midweek press conference that what he described as an “incredible offer” had been put forward to the player – before reiterating that while he was confident he would sign the club would not be held to ransom.
He said: “I know in the case with Raheem is that he’s been offered a wonderful deal for a young player who is 20 and is still developing.
“He’s made some great strides in the last couple of years but as I said he is now getting his reward for that and hopefully his representatives can find agreement with the club.
“The player is very happy and wants to continue working in the way that he has been.
“I’m only saying what I know the club has offered, which is an incredible deal for a young player. I have spoken to Raheem a number of times and he is very, very happy here and you see that in his game, in his play.
“We see that with a lot of young players, they get an opportunity to play here and also they get rewarded for that.
“But we’re certainly not a club that’s going to give out way, way above what a player is worth at a certain time in their career.”
This season the 20-year-old has already played 33 times for the club and recently has been deployed in a central attacking role in the absence of Daniel Sturridge.
The player was allowed a short winter break by Rodgers following a dip in form and complaints earlier in the season that he was feeling tired.
Liverpool seem to be reaping the rewards of their manager’s decision however with the youngster impressing since returning.
